Charity Foodbank – Borehamwood

When Borehamwood Foodbank needed a replacement for their existing ageing container building, they turned to TF Jackson, a leading modular building manufacturer, for a modern and functional solution. Over time, the existing container space had deteriorated from ongoing wear and tear, impacting the charity’s operations and general appearance. The foodbank needed a cost-effective replacement that would provide functional space while meeting local planning requirements within a budget-friendly framework.

The Challenge

First established in April 2013, the Borehamwood Foodbank supports thousands of people each year with emergency food parcels, over a third of whom are children. Supported by The Trussell Trust, it is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, providing three days of nutritionally balanced food to local people in crisis. It also hosts school lunch events where families can enjoy a healthy meal with the opportunity to learn new recipes and even help cook their own lunch!

The Build

TF Jackson’s new modular building needed to address several core requirements:

  1. Security: As the building would store essential food supplies, added protection was essential. Security measures included a double-door electric roller shutter and anti-vandal protection.
  2. Aesthetic Appeal: It was crucial for the foodbank that the building looked the part, fit in with the adjacent church, and meet local planning requirements.
  3. Durability and Longevity: Given the foodbank’s limited resources, the new building needed to be a long-term solution, offering durability and minimal maintenance for decades to come.
  4. The completed project delivered a building that not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations; the resulting custom-built, four-bay modular unit ticked every box. The completed design featured a versatile layout with separate zones, including an internal office, kitchenette and toilet. There was also a main open-plan area for the food bank’s packing operations where volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date and parcel up. This simple box of food makes a big difference, helping foodbanks prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.

The building was finished in stunning red cedar cladding, which not only improved the external appearance but also complemented the existing church architecture, ensuring compliance with local planning regulations.

The Benefits of Modular Construction

Modular buildings offer a cost-effective and efficient solution for projects like this. By manufacturing the building off-site, you reduce construction time and also minimise disruption to daily operations with a quick and seamless installation. The flexibility of a customisable design allows TF Jackson to meet specific customer needs and preferences. By choosing a modular building solution, Borehamwood Food Bank was able to create a modern and functional facility that will serve its community for years to come.

The Borehamwood Food Bank project demonstrates the long-term value of modular buildings in the charity sector. It showcases TF Jackson’s ability to deliver modular solutions that combine practicality, durability, and aesthetic appeal while meeting tight budgetary constraints. The new facility provides Borehamwood Foodbank with a professional, secure, and welcoming environment that enhances its ability to serve the community effectively.
