The Sheffield Botanical Gardens are not just a beautiful public space, they’re a labour of love, maintained with pride by a dedicated group of volunteers. With over 150 people giving their time regularly, it became clear that the existing Education Centre and muddy greenhouse just weren’t cutting it anymore. Volunteers needed somewhere to store tools, warm up on cold days, have a cuppa, and catch up with each other after working in the gardens.
That need became the seed of a bigger plan: a new Volunteer Centre that would offer comfort, functionality, and a real sense of ownership for those who work hard to keep the Gardens looking their best.
As with many good ideas, this one had its challenges. The site is part of a Grade II-listed heritage area, and that comes with strict design and planning requirements. Ownership and oversight are shared across multiple groups, from the Sheffield City Council to charitable trusts, and getting everyone on board required clear communication and plenty of patience.
On top of that, the actual installation site had very limited access. Lifting the building into place required a specialist crane operation and detailed planning to avoid damaging the surrounding gardens.
FOBS needed a supplier who could navigate these logistical and bureaucratic hurdles, and still deliver a great building. That’s where TF Jackson came in.
TF Jackson designed a two-bay modular building that looks and feels right at home in its surroundings. Clad in burned-effect timber, the building echoes the natural tones of the Gardens and blends seamlessly into its environment. Full-length windows flood the space with natural light, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Inside, there’s a kitchenette, heating, and enough space for volunteers to relax, meet, and catch up. Importantly, the building is insulated and powered for year-round use, making it just as comfortable in winter as it is in summer.
Installation was handled with military precision. A full site survey helped the TF Jackson team understand the tight constraints of the location and plan a foundation-free installation without traditional disruptive groundwork. Once everything was ready, the building was craned into place with minimal disturbance, a very special moment for the people who witnessed it, after years of waiting.
This project worked because everyone involved shared a vision, and because TF Jackson was flexible, responsive, and helpful every step of the way.

From the initial visit to the final crane-in, everything went smoothly. The building looks lovely and is already well used and appreciated by our volunteers.”
One particularly standout gesture? Despite the three-year journey to secure permissions and funding, TF Jackson honoured the original price, with no hidden costs or surprise markups. That kind of integrity left a lasting impression.
Since opening in May 2025 (with the Lord Mayor of Sheffield cutting the ribbon, no less), the new Volunteer Centre has become a true hub for the community of gardeners and green space lovers.
Volunteers now have a space to gather, share news on the noticeboard, eat lunch, wash up after muddy tasks, and even hold informal meetings. It’s helped boost morale, build a stronger sense of community, and improved the working environment for a growing team of volunteers.
